If you work with users who speak different languages, you may want to offer learning activities in multiple languages.
Multilingual support is available for e-learnings and microlearnings. This allows a single learning activity to exist in multiple language versions.
Please note!
Multilingual support is not available for exams or for link, file, and video microlearnings. All content within e-learnings and microlearnings can be translated except images, videos, and the contents of SCORM files.
How do I translate my learning activities?
Learning activities can be translated all at once or per learning format. Both options are explained in this article. Before you start translating, make sure the required preparation steps are completed.
Preparation
Make sure the base language of the learning activity is set correctly.
Existing learning activity
Check whether the content of the learning formats matches the base language of the learning activity.
If necessary, adjust the base language in the learning activity settings under 'Language'.
New learning activity
Decide what the base language of the learning activity should be. By default, this is the academy’s default language.
The base language can be changed under 'Language' in the learning activity settings.
Good to know!
Learning activities are translated from the base language. If a user’s account language is not enabled for the learning activity, the activity will be shown in the base language.
Translating the entire learning activity
Automatically translating the entire learning activity translates all content at once.
Tip!
Automatically translating the entire learning activity is the fastest and most complete approach. The following content is translated:
Title and description
E-learning introduction
Titles of sections, chapters, paragraphs, and assessment components
All learning formats
Go to the learning activity settings.
Click 'Translate' next to the language you want to translate to.
Wait for the translation to finish and close the pop-up.
Navigate to the content of the e-learning or microlearning and select the newly translated language in the top-right corner.
Review the translation and adjust it if necessary.
This also applies to the title, description, and e-learning introduction.
In the learning activity settings, enable the toggle for the relevant language if you want this language version to be available to users.
Good to know!
The languages enabled for your academy are the languages available for translation. You can manage these via the language settings.
Once a language toggle is enabled in the learning activity settings, that language becomes available to users. Only enable it once the translation is complete.
While editing e-learning or microlearning content, you can switch between all languages enabled for your academy, allowing you to prepare translations before making them available to users.
Translating per learning format
In addition to translating the entire learning activity at once, you can also translate per learning format. This can be done from the learning activity itself or via the Warehouse.
From the learning activity
Navigate to the content of the e-learning or microlearning and select the language you want to translate to in the top-right corner.
For each learning format that does not yet exist in the selected language, you will see a notification.
Click the pencil icon for the learning format you want to translate.
You will now see an empty version of the learning format in the selected language.
Click 'Translate this content' to automatically translate it, or manually add the translation.
Wait until the translation is complete and close the pop-up.
Save the changes to the learning format.
From the Warehouse
Go to 'Content' and then to 'Warehouse'.
Search for and open the learning format you want to translate.
You can translate the learning format either manually or automatically.
To translate automatically, click 'Translate' next to the desired language under 'Languages'. Wait until the translation is complete and close the pop-up. You can then use the language filter in the top-right corner to select the language, review the translation, and make adjustments if needed.
To translate manually, select the language you want to translate to in the top-right corner. You will see an empty version of the learning format in the selected language. Add the translation and save your changes.
Good to know!
A learning format can exist in multiple language versions while remaining the same learning format.
Learning objectives and tags are not translated.
You can always edit an automatic translation manually.
Automatic translation only occurs when you click the translate button. If you update a learning format, translations are not updated automatically. In that case, make the change in the base language and regenerate the translations for the other languages.
Following a learning activity as a user
As a user, you will be offered the learning activity in the language set for your account, provided that this language is enabled in the learning activity settings.
If your account language is not enabled, the learning activity will be shown in its base language. When opening the learning activity, users can also manually change the language in which they follow it.
User does not see the learning activity in the correct language
If a user does not see the learning activity in their desired language, follow these steps.
Is the user’s language enabled for the learning activity?
No: Translate the learning activity into this language and enable it in the learning activity settings.
Yes: Check whether the learning activity has been fully translated into that language and add any missing translations if necessary.
